This is an example of an accounting general ledger. As you can see, there's three points. As defined, Accounts Payable is when you owe money to a creditor (negative) But! If the Accounts Payable is on the Debit row, then it's a positive, and vice versa.
The balance is $4,000 and the next payment is $3,640, which is on the debit section, so it adds to $7,640. The next payment is in the credit row, meaning you'll take away $430 from the balance. $7,210 is the total amount.

Here it's more intuitive, so expenses are negatives, and sales/profit is what you begin with. You're craving out expenses from the sales to reach your net income, what you actually get.
